The Maya called it Xibalba, the underworld beneath the limestone. And they were right. Beneath the Yucatán Peninsula, a 722-kilometre network of underwater caves connects cenote to cenote in the longest-known submerged cave system on Earth. CINDAQ, the centre that documents and measures the system, confirmed this record only in 2018, when divers linked two separate cave networks into a single connected labyrinth. That discovery is still relatively unknown outside the diving community.
Here is what those divers found: crystalline freshwater with visibility often exceeding 100 metres. A halocline layer, a shimmering, lens-like boundary where freshwater meets saltwater, that distorts light in ways that feel closer to science fiction than swimming. Cave formations hundreds of thousands of years old, exposed by the last Ice Age and submerged again when sea levels rose. And everywhere, the ghost of a civilisation that used these entrances to the underworld for ceremony, for sacrifice, and for life.
Cenote exploration is not a half-day stop on the way to Chichen Itzá. It is a multi-day adventure in its own right, one that scales from a first snorkel at a pool-like open cenote to technical cave diving through passages no sunlight has reached in 10,000 years. This guide is for everyone across that spectrum.
What are cenotes, Really?
A cenote forms when the thin limestone ceiling of an underground river or cave collapses, opening an entrance to the water below. The Yucatán Peninsula sits on a flat limestone shelf with almost no surface rivers, all the water moves underground. Over millennia, that water carved the cave network now known as Sistema Sac Actun: 722 kilometres and counting, since cave divers are still mapping new passages every year.
The Maya understood the geology intuitively, even if they described it in different terms. Cenotes were the doorways to Xibalba, the underworld ruled by death gods, where the Hero Twins of the Popol Vuh descended to fight and return transformed. Offerings thrown into cenotes, jade, obsidian, human remains, have been found at many sites. The sacred cenote at Chichén Itzá alone yielded gold, jade, copal incense, and over 100 human skeletons when it was dredged in the early twentieth century.
Today, the Yucatán's cenotes attract scientists, divers, and travellers who want something genuinely unlike anything else in the world. There are over 6,000 known cenotes across the peninsula, though most are not accessible to visitors. The ones that are accessible range from wide-open surface pools surrounded by jungle to narrow cave passages that require technical certification to enter legally and safely.
Snorkel vs. cavern dive vs. cave dive: which experience is right for you?
The three tiers of cenote experience are not just marketing categories, they correspond to real differences in depth, darkness, and skill requirement.
Snorkelling is available at almost every accessible cenote. You float on the surface or swim a few metres down with a mask and fins, experiencing the visual world above the halocline without entering any confined space. No certification required. Suitable for all swimmers. The visual impact, especially in cavern-type cenotes where sunlight enters at an angle and creates visible light beams through the water, is extraordinary even at this level.
Cavern diving is the middle tier. A cavern is defined as a section of overhead environment where natural light is still visible, you never leave the light zone and you never lose sight of the exit. PADI defines cavern diving as remaining within 60 metres of an open-water exit and always within sight of daylight. Requires open-water certification plus a cavern speciality course (typically one day of training). This is the level at which you enter Dos Ojos, Chac Mool, and Gran Cenote's most dramatic passages.
Cave diving is technical diving in overhead environments beyond the light zone. No natural light. Navigation by reel and permanent lines. Strict gas management protocols. Requires a full cave diving certification, a multi-day course with prerequisites. This is the realm of exploration, long passages, and the discoveries that extended Sistema Sac Actun's measured length by hundreds of kilometres. Cave diving in the Yucatán is among the most sought-after technical diving objectives in the world.
The key rule: never exceed your certification level inside a cenote. The environment is unforgiving. Silt suspended by improper finning reduces visibility to zero in seconds. Without a guide line, a diver in a blacked-out cave passage has almost no way to find the exit.
The best cenotes by type: Dos Ojos, Chac Mool, The Pit, Gran cenote, and cenote Ik Kil
Dos Ojos ("Two Eyes") is named for the two circular openings that mark its entrance. It is one of the most-visited cavern systems in the Yucatán for good reason: the barrel vault passage between the two eyes is one of the most visually stunning cavern dives anywhere, with constant sunlight filtering through the water and a halocline layer that makes the cave floor appear to shimmer. Located 20km south of Tulum, with reliable operator infrastructure. Also excellent for snorkelling.
Chac Mool is a cave system with a particularly pronounced halocline, the boundary between fresh and salt water here is so sharp it creates a visible "mercury" layer that makes objects on the other side appear warped. The cave is longer and darker than Dos Ojos, making it better suited to cavern and cave divers than snorkellers. The hydrogen sulphide layer (a bacterial mat that creates a low-oxygen layer deep in the system) adds visual drama that experienced divers seek specifically.
The Pit is the deepest publicly accessible cenote in the Yucatán at approximately 119 metres. Open-water divers can descend to 40 metres through a column of water lit from above, watching the halocline form a mirror-like ceiling below them. Cave divers descend further into the hydrogen sulphide cloud and beyond. Found 25km south of Tulum on the same road as Dos Ojos. The light show in the morning, when sunlight enters at a low angle and shafts down through the water column, is considered one of the great underwater photography subjects in the world.
Gran Cenote is one of the best options for snorkellers and non-divers. The cenote is partially open to the sky, crystal clear, and surrounded by a mangrove ecosystem. Turtles frequently rest near the entrance. The cavern section is accessible to snorkellers with a guide, making it unusual among cavern-type cenotes. Located 5km west of Tulum on the road to Cobá.
Cenote Ik Kil is the most visually dramatic open cenote, a nearly circular, 60-metre-wide pit dropping 26 metres to the water, with hanging vines cascading down the walls and sunlight pouring in from above. Located 3km from Chichén Itzá. Gets very busy during peak hours; arrive before 9am. Primarily a swimming and snorkelling cenote rather than a diving one.
How to build a 3-day cenote circuit from Tulum or Valladolid
Tulum base: Day 1 — Gran Cenote (morning before crowds, snorkel + cavern dive), Cenote Dos Ojos (afternoon). Day 2 — Chac Mool (morning, cavern or cave diving focus), The Pit (afternoon). Day 3 — Cenote Tajma Ha or Sistema Nohoch Nah Chich (the original record-holder, now part of Sac Actun system, still offering remarkable cavern passages).
Valladolid base: Better positioned for the northern cenotes including Cenote Dzitnup (Xkeken), Cenote Samulá, and the more remote Cenote Yokdzonot. The colonial town itself is one of the most attractive bases in the Yucatán. Transportation to the Tulum-area cenotes is 2 hours south.
The important rule for any cenote circuit: book operators in advance, especially for The Pit and Chac Mool, which have limited daily entry slots. During December–April peak season, popular sites fill before noon.
Getting there: The cenote corridor between Tulum and Dos Ojos is accessible by rental car, bike, or colectivo from Tulum's town centre. A car gives the most flexibility for early morning arrivals before the group tours arrive.
How to vet a cenote operator: certification, group Size, and environmental protocols
The cenote tourism market in the Yucatán has grown rapidly, and operator quality varies significantly. Use these criteria:
PADI or SSI certification for all diving activities. Any reputable cenote dive operator will ask to see your certification card before you enter the water on a dive. If they don't ask, walk away.
Group size. Quality cavern and cave dive operators cap groups at 4 divers per guide, maximum. Larger groups create more silt disturbance and more safety risk. Snorkel groups can be larger, but 8–10 per guide is reasonable.
Sunscreen prohibition. Most reputable cenotes ban chemical sunscreen entirely, and some ban physical sunscreen (zinc oxide) in the water as well. This is enforced at good operators, not just mentioned. If an operator allows sunscreen without alternative, the environmental protocol is lax.
Local guide knowledge. The best cenote guides are often cave divers themselves who have explored far beyond the visitor corridors. Ask about the dive sites before you book, a knowledgeable guide will explain the system, the species found in it, and the current conditions. Generic answers suggest a low-quality operation.
Gear rental quality. Check that BCD, regulators, and wetsuits are modern and well-maintained. A 3mm wetsuit is typical for the Yucatán cenotes, where water temperature stays around 24–25°C year-round.
What to Bring, what to leave behind (and why sunscreen is banned)
Bring: Biodegradable insect repellent for the jungle walk in, water shoes or reef boots for rocky cenote edges, a rash guard or wetsuit layer, an underwater light for cavern or cave sections (even as a snorkeller, a small torch reveals the textures of cave formations), and a dry bag for valuables.
Leave behind: Chemical sunscreen, the oxybenzone and octinoxate in conventional sunscreen is toxic to cave ecosystems. The same rule that protects coral reefs applies underground: the Yucatán cenote water feeds directly into the aquifer and eventually the sea, with no filtration. Many operators provide a rinse shower before entry and ask guests not to apply sunscreen on the day of a cenote visit. Respect this. It is the correct call.
Also leave: GoPro setups that require extensive arm movement to operate. Inexperienced swimmers holding camera rigs fin erratically and stir silt. If you want underwater video in a cave environment, practise hovering neutrally buoyant before you attempt filming.
When to go and how to book before the best spots fill up
The Yucatán has no true off-season for cenote visits, the water temperature is constant and the caves are always accessible. The factors that vary are surface heat and rainfall.
November–April is the dry season and the most popular period for international visitors. Crowds at major cenotes peak December–February and again during Semana Santa (Easter week). To avoid crowds: arrive at opening (7–8am), book weekday slots, or choose operators that serve smaller groups.
May–October is the rainy season. Surface heat is intense. The cenotes feel even more refreshing. Tulum has lower visitor density. The caves are unaffected by rain, they are underground. This is an excellent time for serious divers who want quieter conditions on-site.
Booking: Gran Cenote and Dos Ojos can be visited without advance booking for snorkel access. For cavern and cave diving, book at least 3–7 days in advance during peak season, and 2–3 weeks in advance for November–February. The Pit in particular has a limited daily entry.
